Tetsuya Ishida

-This artist combines different visual elements to create messages. What do you think this one means?

I personally think it is trying to reflect the real Japanese's life. If you look closely to the artwork, it seems like those two people are couples. They are lying on a ground and there are houses around them. I think the couples got seperated from the disaster. The heads on the ground are probably people who got injured during the disaster. The couple seemed depressed and upset. You can actually tell from their facial expressions. It gave people a really sad and negative impression. Since there was a tsunami happening in Japan, that is why I thought of tsunami when I saw street was in chaos. They probably lost each other during the disaster was happening. The city is a huge mess and it is chaotic. Cars and trees are flooded in the water.

 - The mood is often dark, why do you think that is?

Since his theme relfects the Japanese's life, it is mostly dark. People tend to show life in a city in a postive way. Artists would like to show good things of their own countries. His works are really sad and heartbreaking. He tend to blend the machines and humans together, into like a combination of human and machine. If the mood is dark, people could tell what he is trying to express easily, since the important things would stand out. I think mainly because some of his artworks are about teenagers in school life. In order to show the students' stress and teachers putting pressures, Tetsuya chose a mood with black and depressing theme.

-If his works work for a psychological analysis, how would you interpret these.

Obviosuly, his artworks are really catchy and interesting. He is different from other artists, he tried to combine buildings and people. He is trying to show the youths or teenagers's stress. Teachers at school tend to give a lot of works or put lots of pressures until they could be "perfect.". Teenagers are extremely stressed and commit suicide. His artworks literally show the negative side of the society. It is more like showing Japanese society issues. His artworks are not only focusing on academic life in Japan but also Japan's society and roles in world. Japanese struggle a lot even for the adults but not only the students. His makes his mood really dark since it makes people feel a bit sad. They will feel sympathy at the same time.
